We use standard, readily available ceramic tiles
for painting. Sizes range from 4" X 4" tumbled marble pieces,
through 12" X 12" glazed ceramic floor tile. Our signature pieces
are 3" X 6" tumbled marble. We suggest displaying your
painting either on an easel (available at crafts stores or even
Wal-Mart) on a shelf or table or by hanging on the wall. Hangers
or cork backing can be added to any tile on request (tiles
8" or larger should be mounted in a wooden frame because of the weight
of the tile) and at no extra charge. Larger tiles can be displayed as trivets or framed
and hung on the wall for a most unique addition to your collection.
Plant stands feature square tiles only, and
sizes are chosen to fit the top of the stand. Each plant stand is
different, because we shop them retail and choose an
eclectic
collection. It is possible to request either a dark or
light finish for a plant stand, but we reserve the right to make a final
selection based on availability.
Once a design and a tile have been chosen, the
tile is sealed with a commercial sealant, to protect the surface beneath
the painting, and to prevent water from being absorbed and later
distorting the image. The design is then centered on the tile and
painting is done with oil paints. Once the painting is dry (about
one to two weeks), the entire tile surface is treated with a high
gloss water/weather-proof topcoat to again seal the surface and make it
waterproof. While your tile may be displayed outdoors, it is
possible that freezing weathers could crack the tile, so we do recommend
bringing your piece indoors in cold weather.
You can request that tiles be painted using
porcelain paints (baked on and dishwasher-safe) at no extra charge.
The quality of the image may not be as high as those painted in oils,
and certainly the one-of-a-kind character will be lost. If
choosing the porcelain paint option, be sure to note that when ordering.
Tiles painted with porcelain paints are suitable for backsplashes and
for practical use in bathrooms and kitchens.
Once dry, your oil-painted tile can be cleaned with warm
soapy water and a soft cloth. Abrasive cleaners and dishwashers
are NOT recommended and may damage your piece.
